Vitamin Supplements Question

Waiting for two LC books to arrive in the mail. In the meantime...

I'm taking a multivitamin (without iron), selenium, CoQ10, E (I've always taken these), and now chromium. (I know I should be taking calcium as well and plan to add that.)

Should I be taking a potasium suppliment as well....? Can taking this in any way be harmful...?

Thanks!

potassium

hi Shirley,

Taking extra potassium would be a good idea. Ketosis, and drinking lots of water, plus the release of water from the tissues will lead to potassium being lost in the urine. Low potassium levels can cause fatigue, muscle weakness and headaches. You can take potassium as a pill ... I think it's available as 99 mg ... which you can safely take once or twice a day. A cheaper way is to use a salt substitute such as NoSalt, or Morton's Lite Salt, which you can buy at any grocery ... these contain potassium chloride, and you use them just as you would regular salt, including in recipes.

If you're taking any medication for blood pressure, heart or kidney disease ... or are diabetic on insulin, you should discuss taking potassium with your doctor. Note however, that 99 mg is very small amount ... a large banana contains 300 mg.

On the calcium ... see if you can find it as a Calcium-Magnesium combination, which you take one tablet, three times a day .... take the third dose at bedtime, it will help with restful sleep :) (remember grandma's glass of warm milk at bedtime?)
