Scalloped Turnips
Scalloped Turnips (from southern living)
3 medium turnips, peeled and sliced 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons pork rind flour 1/2 cups cream 1/2 cup mayo 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup shredded mild Cheddar cheese Cook turnips uncovered in boiling salted water over for 15 minutes or until tender. Drain; transfer to a lightly greased 2-quart casserole. Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat; blend in flour, and cook 1 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in cream and mayo; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Stir in salt and pepper. Pour sauce over turnips; sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. Yield 6 servings thanks to karen for helping me modify this to LC |
thanks for this recipe. I've been missing au gratin potatoes and this fits the bill for an alternative. I'm going off to make it now...

So, I followed your recipe and I only had 2 turnips so I substituted a kohlrabi instead--wow, kohlrabi is great for this recipe!!! Maybe try it sometime??? It's a much milder veggie than turnip but with the same texture. YUM!!!
Thanks again for the recipe--I could actually eat the cheese sauce on it's own (kept licking the spoon--good thing I'm the only one eating the dish :p ) Nicole |
