Shakes and Helping in Weight Loss

I have been drinking the Atkins RTD Shakes (11 oz cans) for breakfast and wonder from you Atkins experts who drink these shakes - do you feel they actually speed up your progress? I was re-reading my journal (soon will be 1 full year on Atkins) and noticed that when I drank shakes during the work week I would see a 2 lb or more whoosh by the weekend. I also find that my ketosis symptoms tend to be more pronounced when I have a shake in the a.m.....could be just me...but just wondering if anyone noticed similar?

Before your thread gets lost....I've noted this to and while my scale does not reflect it personally I have trimmed down quite a bit since starting this plan. I think 1 shake when I wake up is helping cause I do stay full with them.

I have to have something creamy on omy tummy first thing in the morning or I get sick and then a couple hours or so later I will have my usual breakfast.

I love the chocolate, just wish they were not so darn expensive!!!

Are these shakes powdered or are they like a slim fast that is in the cans? Im interested. Can I drink them on induction?

Mobster:

You can buy either or. lately it's been a shake here (in a can) a shake there as I can afford it. It is much for affordable to buy the powdered stuff but it has kind of a grainier texture to it and not as sweet so I generally add splenda. It is still pretty tasty stuff tho'.

You can have them in induction but in some people it stalls their weight loss so to be on the safe side I would buy one or two in a can to test it out and make sure it's not gonna stall you and that you'll actually like it.

I've been mixing up a shake every morning for the last few weeks because I'm trying to save time in the morning and also to get a break from the usual eggs. Some mornings I mix up half a shake ( 1 scoop) and make some flax o meal. I haven't noticed any speed up in my weight loss though even though I've reduced my calories by about 200 per day by using the shakes. Only getting in about 3-4 days a week exercise instead of my usual 6 days because it's tax season for me and the overtime is getting in the way so that may account for the status quo with respect to the weight loss.

I make my own shake, using protein powder, sugar free syrup flavorings, heavy whipping cream, an egg, and lots of ice. My shakes are 6 carbs each - and yummy.

Frustrated, with not losing for a long time, I decided to try using my shake like the slim fast plan (replace a meal with the shake). So Sunday I had 2 shakes (am/pm) and steak/salad/veggie for dinner. Monday and Tuesday I had shakes am and for dinner, with a large salad for lunch - and a snack of cheese and 2 flax muffins.

I am down 5 pounds in 4 days!!! :)

Hi CharM -- couple of questions...do you add a raw egg to your shake or do you use a pasteurized egg product like egg beaters ? Also is Slim Fast making a lo-carb shake now ? I have a bunch of cans of Slim Fast that I got a year ago from Sam's, but I've been avoiding them big time because they're so high in carbs.

I tweaked my Ultra Slimfast "instant breakfast" to make it lower carb:
I use 1 Tbs. of the Ultra Slimfast powder (Chocolate Royale) and 1 tsp. of unsweetened Hershey's cocoa. There is more than enough sugar in the Slimfast to sweeten the cocoa.
Each regular scoop (3 Tbs.) of Ultra Slimfast powder is 24 carbs, so this cuts it to 8, plus 1 carb for the cocoa. Plus 12 carbs for the 2% milk. 21 carbs total. Not good, I know, but better than the 36 carbs in the original.
Now I know the strict Atkins dieters will be violently opposed, but I've been eating "instant breakfast" for almost 40 years and was not willing to give them up when I started Atkins. I am not a morning person and don't want to face any decisions when I get up. I don't like eggs or other breakfast food, for that matter (Luckily, I never liked cold cereal, hot cereal, pancakes, biscuits, Danish, etc.) When I started Atkins, I decided that it would be for the long haul, and if I was going to stick with it, it had to be a diet I could live with indefinitely. It works for me.

Downscale, why don't you just use the Atkins shakes? They would make an instant breakfast without all the carbs. Maybe I missed where you explained that part and if so, sorry. Just a little confused on why you would choose Slimfast shakes over the Atkins shakes if you are doing low carb.

I don't know if my taste buds changed or they just made the Atkins shakes much better tasting.

I tried both the powder and ready to drink versions over a year ago and thought they were horrible. Then after reading the reviews on this site I thought I'd try them again, plus they were on sale for 4 for $5 at my local grocery store.

I tried both the vanilla and strawberry and they are both great. I have been drinking them every morning for the past week so I'll see if it helps any with losing extra pounds.

I'm like the others who have a problem eating “real” food early in the morning. I'm so used to skipping breakfast and just waiting for lunch, but I know that's not good on this WOE. I think these shakes will be a big help.

I stocked up on them at the store while they were on sale, but now their back up to 4 for $10. Guess I'll have to search the web for a deal.

I use the Ultra Slimfast powder because I had several cannisters stockpiled when I decided to start Atkins and also, it is cheaper than Atkins powder. I already know how the Ultra Slimfast tastes, so switching to the Atkins stuff would be a leap of faith -- how does it taste?

So far I've tried the strawberry, which I liked. I have a can of the chocolate in the fridge, I'll drink it Friday. I'm doing the shakes on Fridays through Lent, since no meats allowed. I drink the pre-mixed. They're not too expensive ~ Wal-Mart.
God Bless,

I do use raw egg - I have not looked into anything else. I should check egg beaters.

I cannot stress enough - how good my shakes are

Good, and for me, very filling. :D

I think part of my "stall" problem was from not eating. I am not a big breakfast eater, and often times at work, I get so busy, I work right through my lunch.

I have continued with shakes in the morning and for dinner, with a large salad for lunch.

Down another half pound this morning - I am thrilled. :D :D :D
That is 5 1/2 pounds in 4 days!!!!!

Hello,
I am very new to all of this and I am ready to start Atkins. I have hypothyroidism and from what I have read a low carb diet to stabilize my blood sugar is just what I need to get my thyroid stabilized and lose some of this weight.

I have two questions:
1. I do not know if anyone answered, but can you drink the shake during induction?
2. Also can you use the shake as a meal replacement. I am not much of a cook so if I could substitute the shake for induction that would be great. I would also have my salads.

Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Hi Charm!
Your shake sounds really good! Could you post the measurements for everything you put in your shake? Thanks!
