Carbs in Flax?

Hi my wife and I have started taking 2 tbs. of flax seed a day. I have mine uncrushed my wife has hers crushed.

on fit day the carbs are listed as 4g per tbs. will this be the same for crushed and uncrushed?

Hi Graham!

According to my carb counter book, 2 tablespoons of ground flax has 6 grams of carb and 6 grams of fiber (ECC = 0), while 3 tablespoons of flax seeds have 11 grams of carb and 6 grams of fiber. It's better to have the flax seeds crushed or ground as the body can't digest the tough shell of the seeds and you get much less benefit from eating the whole seeds. HTH

Hi Lisa

Hi Lisa thanks for the info, my wife is taking the flax seed as a preventive against Brest cancer, I understand in her case it is advisable to take it in a ground form.

I on the other hand am taking it as a cure for constipation, it seems to be working fine in that department will it work the same in a ground form for me?

Regards Graham

Hi Graham!

Yes, it will work just as well, if not better, in ground form as a means of keeping you regular and if you use the ground form you are also getting the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids as well. Both my husband and I use the ground form as a substitute for our morning hot cereal (you can check the recipes forum for some great recipes for this) almost every day.

how much?

Lisa how much flax do you take, do you split it up or do you take it all at once?

Graham..

I usually take mine all at once...1/4 cup mixed with 1/4 cup unprocessed wheat bran (ground almonds are also good) and 1/2 cup hot water along with whatever flavorings or sweeteners sound good that morning and some butter and heavy cream. Some also mix in a scoop of protein powder to help it fill you up for longer. I actually like the taste, but my kids aren't quite so enthusiastic about it. ;)
