Body fat measurement?

Can anyone recommend a good device or method for measuring body fat? I think as I near my goal that the scale is less and less valuable and I would like to set new goals based on my percentage of body fat?

Do you have to find a gym or trainer who will do the measurement for you, or are the Tanita-type scales useful?

I have heard that the bodyfat scales are pretty useless, and that having a trainer do the measurements with calipers can also be inaccurate, depending on which trainer you have, exactly which spot on you they pinch, and (if you're female) your TOM.

You're probably right that as you near your goal the scale numbers are going to mean less. The best way to keep an eye on your progress is going to be measurements (chest, waist, hip, arm, leg and neck) and how your clothes are fitting, I think...unless you happen to have access to a water tank for the submersion test ;)

Hi Nelson,
I purchased a Tanita scale in January for the same purpose you are thinking about. As I have reached my weight goal, I now am focusing on lowering my body fat through exercise and conditioning. Wow, what a slow process, but very rewarding! I am very happy with the scale as it seems very repeatable. As far as accuracy, I suspect that all methods are probably the same for as with weight measurement, the value is only in the or weekly or longer average of the numbers. As far as the convenience and cost, I vote for the Tanita,
Best wishes,
T.

Thanks for the input

One more question about the scales. I think I remember hearing that they use sound or light or something through the feet to measure body fat. I have an orthopedic issue that prevents one heel from touching the ground--one leg is about 3 inches shorter than the other, and I cannot flex the ankle at all. Would this prevent the body fat scale from working for me?

Nelson,
I think it would not work for you. The scales measure by sending a small electrical charge into your body through your feet which rest on 4 pads: two that touch the front and two that touch the heals. I just tried it and all four must make contact to get a reading.
Best,
T.
