Low carbing and giving blood...

I want to give blood on Saturday for the Red Cross. But I'm nervous.
One, I've never done this before (I've been off Ridalin for 2 years now) and
Two, I can't drink the orange juice or what ever "snack" they offer and I'm walking home.
My question: What should I bring with me to eat to help me recover from the blood being taken? I plan definitely bringing water.
Anyone?

hi Lessara,

We had a discussion a while ago about donating blood and lowcarbing etc .. check it out here, there's some interesting info. about anemia and iron.

As for what to take to eat ... you're right about the water, take at LEAST a liter. I'd take some protein snacks ... cheese, cold meat, beef jerky (if you can find sugar-free). Don't be in a hurry to leave afterward; I'm sure they'll let you rest or recline for a half-hour if you're feeling at all weak or "woozy". Keeping yourself hydrated will be the most important thing, so drink that water, and avoid caffeine (if you have it) the day of the procedure ... it's a diuretic, and could possibly make you a bit dehydrated before you even get to the clinic.

Good luck :)

Doreen
