POLL: Favorite Lo-Carb Finds

What are your favorite lo-carb find?
Where did you find them?
And...How do you prepare them?

I love finding out about new products and where to purchase them. I also like to here about experimentation with different vegetables. It's amazing what all is out there if you just figure out how to use/cook it.

My favorite finds...

Keto Oatmeal (health food store)

Alfredo Sauce (grocery store)
-used over chicken & broccolli

Pre-cooked bacon (Sam's)

Pre-cooked frozen sausage (Sam's)

Hot & spicy pork rinds
(grocery store & dollar store)

Russell Stover Chocolates (wal-mart)
-eaten only in emergencies :p

Tyson quick cook boneless chicken breasts
-flattened before frozen so it cooks
quicker on the George Foreman grill
(Sam's)

Frozen Sirloin Burgers (Sam's)
-love to throw them on the grill
and top with salsa and sour cream

Atkins B-B-Q Sauce & Steak Sauce
-both taste great on anything
(health food store)

Frozen bell pepper slices (walmart)

Frozen diced onions (walmart)
-great to throw in with stir-fry meat

La Tortilla tortillas (netrition.com)
-Makes wonderful sandwich wraps,
quesadillas, and fajitas! Love all
flavors. Have discovered that the
green onion is great for fajitas,
garlic herb is great for quesadillas,
and wheat is best for ham and cheese
wraps.

Just my 2 cents!

Once people think about this question, this thread will have a really good response...

My greatest find was little party wings...chicken legs and wings in a giant bag (Smart & Final, Sams, anywhere...around $3.89)

and then I found this great hotwing sauce (that's not too hot!) at Albertsons, 2 for $5. that has 0 carbs. I will come back later with the brand...forgot it for now!

Since I've been able to make my own "wing dings" I'm a happy cat!!

Of course, I eat WAY too many...but at least they're not peanuts.

lhill Thu, Mar-06-03 14:04

the low carb things that

i found and liked are wings and a great bbq sauce recipe(that someone gave me from here). The wings you can get at any food store.
Atkins bread mixes that i use in my bread machine, found these at top food store(a chain like safeway)
Atkins muffin mixes that i use for a change from eggs at brekfest(found these at safeway)
La Tortilla factory low carb tortillas, found these at safeway too and use them for everything, sandwich, soft taco, fajitas, ect.

My new favorites!

I love cheeter's crackers w/ butter or cream cheese and I love my whey protein shake with soy milk (only 1 carb a cup for the soy milk).

Oh and my favorite LC recipes are the atkins stuffed pancake (filled with ricotta and SF apricot jam) and my homemade LC zucchini muffins are to die for!

Waterbaby Thu, Mar-06-03 14:09

Some of my favorites

Lets see......

I really like the Atkins flakes with almonds....bought directly from Atkins web site...I got so tired of eggs and missed my morning cereal that this does the trick!

Also found KetoCrisps chips in nacho cheese flavor...I buy them at a local "Natural Foods Store" They have a good taste and satisfy my need to crunch on chips!

Sugar free saltwater taffy..bought from Atkins direct. It has no carbs and is allowed on induction....I put one piece in my mouth and let it dissolve slowly! Very Good

Atkins brand muffin mixes.....I personally like the cranberry-orange. I make mine in muffin tins and heat them and then top them with butter:) I buy these from the Natural Food store but they do sell them in GNC & Walmart

Well now I am going to try a chocolate cupcake recipe which I found in LowCarb Luxury...Can you tell...I like snack foods and goodies! :D

When I come up with some more foods....I'll Be Back!

I discovered the LaTortilla shells last week, what a great find. Wraps, Breakfeast burritos, and my favorite the wet burrito.

The new Carbolite bars, especially the crispy caramel....mmmmm. I know they contain malatol, but they don't seem to stall me. (30 lbs in just over 2 months!)

Pork rinds smothered in cheese, salsa, and sour cream. A low fat dieters nightmare. Somehow the apparent decadence of the meal seems to add to its appeal!

wcollier Thu, Mar-06-03 17:10

I try not to eat processed foods for health reasons, but I can't resist the La Tortilla Tortillas. I like to fry them a little to make them more crispy.

grabbed a bottle

of no carb/no calorie Blue Cheese dressing just tonight at Giant Eagle - figured it would also work for a dip.

UAGirl Thu, Mar-06-03 21:55

Oooh good post!! :)

Atkins Ketchup. (Ketch-a-tomato) This is perfect for burgers!! :)

Carbolite crispy caramel or carb away bars. (Everynow and then you need a fix!!) :D

Geez, I'm racking my brain here...I'll have to think and come back lol....

CAKES66 Thu, Mar-06-03 23:54

MMM Another food thread

My favorite LC finds:

0 Carb, 0 sugar Blue Cheese Dressing
(Sugar Busters Brand)

Frapuccinos!

My latest favorite thing is the lc frapuccinos I make. I blend ice, a scoope of Designer Whey chocolate, instant decaf coffee, splenda, heavy cream, and water together with a braun hand mixer til it's really smooth. YUM!!! Or lately strawberries have been on sale around here a lot and I mix together strawberries, Designer Whey french vanilla, cream, splenda, and water. Tastes just like a nice strawberry milkshake! :p

Teuthis Sat, Mar-08-03 18:53

Favorite

Roast chicken with herbes de provence rubbed under the skin and inside; with chopped fresh garlic rubbed inside too.

Saute'd Brussels Sprouts.

Saute'd radishes, with a dash of heavy cream at the end.

junebug61 Sun, Mar-09-03 07:30

Westsoy unsweeted soy milk. 1 gram. I use it to make my latte's.

I also enjoy whipped cream sweeted with sf vanilla syrup, davinci. When I want a little something, I spoon a little bit in a bowl, and add a couple T. of ground flax seeds, it really hits the spot.

Auntie J Sun, Mar-09-03 07:47

Lo carb finds

My favorite is the Atkins caraway rye bread mix, great toasted with chicken, egg, or tuna salad on it. YUMMMMMMMM Also, the lemon poppyseed, blueberry & cornmeal muffins are a great change too.. So far, all of the Davinci flavored syrups that I've tried have been great in my "milk shakes", helps cover the soy taste. The adventure continues-------

Third time's a charm...bump!

Loribell Mon, Mar-10-03 20:20

My husband and I love Lasagna so with some thought I oven roasted red, yellow and green peppers. Peeled the skin and use them for layers in between my meat and cheese. With a LC tomato sauce or salsa its the next best thing and the peppers give a sweet twist on a old forbidden favorite.

KDdid Tue, Mar-11-03 16:37

Wow! That sounds like a really great idea. It is probably more carbs than I can intake right now, but I will have to keep that in mind. Sounds delicious.

Spread the word guys! I love hearing everyone's creative voices. How do I attract more people to post to this thread?

AngelaR Tue, Mar-11-03 17:20

Chinese Radish

great idea for a thread:

Chinese radish also called lo bok or daikon radish. It looks like a gigantic white carrot.

Raw:
- dice it into a salad
- slice it into circles and use as "crackers"
- cut it into strips and use to dip into home made creamy dressings

Cooked:
- dice and put into a soup instead of rice, potatoes or noodles
- boil and drain it, slather with butter
- boil and mash it (it's a bit watery)
- chunk it and bake it in the oven with a roast like roast potatoes
- julienne it and use it in a stir fry

It has become our subsitute for potatoes.

Loribell Tue, Mar-11-03 19:01

Your right the peppers are a bit high but with a nice side salad a small portion is slowly savored. I also think I have a line on a not so high pastry I still need to fine tune it but the last time I made it, it worked pretty good, was a little short as we in the baking industry say but not bad. Three ingredents Soy Flour whole grain 35%protien 8carbs in 1/4cup with 3g of fiber. mixed with butter had no lard at the time and some salt. Think the extact was 1/2 cup soy 1/4c butter and a pinch of salt. A tsp or so of water to bind. Rolled between two sheet of wax paper and placed in pie tin. The quiche was so good.

The brand I used was Bob's Red Mill from Milwaukie Oregon (Natural Food Inc.) Hey and I live in remote Northern Ontario where Atkins Product do not exist.

Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom ice cream treats, particularly the crunchy ice cream bars. 6 ECC per bar. Their popsicles are decent, too, though I prefer some flavors to others.

faery Thu, Mar-20-03 10:58

My favorite item are Bran - a - Crisps.
I have them with everything from cheddar cheese to goat cheese and spinach dip.

I have only found them at Whole Foods.

Tedmom Thu, Mar-20-03 11:41

Atkins Plain Crunchers
Keto Banana Nut Hot Cereal
Just the Cheese Chips
Gram's Cinnamon Butter Pork Rinds
Steele's BBQ Sauce
Atkins Corn Muffin Mix
An occasional Carbolite Pecan Caramel Cluster - have to be careful with these, tho, because of high sugar alcohol content and they can be a binge trigger.
Cauliflower for faux potatoes and rice recipes.

lkonzelman Thu, Mar-20-03 11:56

Me again... I keep changing my favorites so I may be back again later.

diet root beer w/ 1 TBS of heavy whipping cream - root beer float (ala Angela)

ashers SF pecan patties (have malitol but if I have to cheat EEC 1 carb for two)

ricotta cheese, 1oz of heavy whipping cream, 1/2 scoop of chocolate protien powder and a cut up strawberry

or

ricotta cheese, 1oz of heavy whipping cream, 1 tsp hersheys sf cocoa, 1 packet of splenda

My favorite is from Costco (similar to Sam's)

Tyson's Tequila Lime chicken wings. These things are to DIE for!!!!! I eat them almost daily. They were making them for free samples, and boy has it payed off in purchases from me!!!!

Lessara Sat, Mar-22-03 07:16

My finds

I don't eat that many process foods either.

But what I appriciate is:

Broccoli Sprouts. They have more flavor and nutrition and less carbs than Broccoli - 2 carbs in half cup serving  You can fry them up, use them to stuff a chicken breast, and put in salads.

Wasabi paste - One little bit has so much flavor for so little carb I think you have to have a whole tsp to have a carb. Tuna never had it so good and mixed with alittle mayo it adds zip to any roastbeef lettuce roll up. Mmmm!

Fruit20- Fruit Juice without the carbs. I get the plus variety so I get the vitamins as well. No carb and sweeten with splenda. Its a comfort thing when you are sick or just wish for some fruit juice.

Atkin Advantage bars: Lemon, Berry Cheesecake, and Frosted Cinnamon. Thank You, Atkins for giving me breakfast again... I can't eat eggs or dairy and this makes breakfast a breeze. I only have one a day to prevent stalling. (Lemon is my favorite)

nitrovixen Sat, Mar-22-03 13:13

Finds:

so many!

Numbered in order of importance: 1 and 2 are a toss-up

1. Flaxomeal: I've only tried Strawberry cream but man oh man! I tried making my own and it's good, although Fitday says it has 6 carbs instead of 2 :(
(www.locarbdiner.com)

2. Todd's bread. I love this stuff, only 1 or two carbs per piece. I like the bagels as hamburger buns, the 3 carb bread (-2 fiber!) with dinner, and the breakfast cocoa bread with breakfast. Slathered with butter, Sprinkled with Splenda and cinnamon!! :yum:

3. Mock Danish: less eggwhites, more egg yolks! I learned this from Angela. Bless her little heart... My favorite variations: pumpkin, spoon of jam in middle, cocoa powder and Ross' chocolate used as icing!! these are a great midmorning snack I can nuke at work to tide me over until lunch.

La Tortilla: tacos, fajitas, wraps, Tostadas, Cassadea (spelling?)
(local Safeway)

Canned Pumpkin: I love this stuff for soups, desserts, in mock danishes, with cream, cinnamon and Splenda!

Swiss Miss Hot cocoa mix, Sugar Free. Sweetened with Splenda baby! I keep it down to 1 Tbsp in my coffee.
(Safeway or Thriftway)

Pork Rinds: breading, snacks, Esp Gram's Gormet sweet buttery cinnamon porkies! They are also pretty good with taco seasoning (and cayenne if you are brave) or ranch powder sprinkled on.
(Gram's gormet= www.gramsgourmet.com/ or www.locarbdiner.com the "granola" is super good too!)

Whitman's Sugar Free sampler: this may very well be my downfall. I found these yesterday at Rite Aid. And I wish I hadn't!!

Carbolite candy: my favorite it by far the citrus sours, but also jelly beans and caramel chews
(Rite Aid)

Grated Zuccini fried in butter

Turnips: julienned, seasoned, then baked or fried, dipped in fry sauce! (1 Tbsp mayo, dot of ketchup, tiny, teeny dot of mustard: It should be coral color. I like less ketchup)

Celery root: dried slightly in warm oven, deep fried into chips!

SF root beer and cream soda with a splash of cream. Can you say Root Beer Float!! yum!
(Safeway)

Yes, I definately like my sweets.
