Supplement Resources
Now that we have a Nutrition and Supplements forum I figured a list of resources would be a good idea.
Information on Supplements: Supplementwatch.com - information on supplements from A-Z, reviews of supplements, a newsletter - there is a members' only area that you can access if you join (25$ ). Wholehealthmd.com - Reference Libraries, 'expert' opinions and a vitamins/supplements section also from A-Z. EFA's - The Essential Fatty Acids Drumlib on Green tea and thermogenesis More to come. Hmmm ... it's likley that the site no longer exists. That happens a lot on the web ;) Thanks for pointing out the broken link, I'll edit the post above. Doreen |
The info on green tea was most helpful :) I knew I started drinking it for a good reason..LOL Thanks for posting this!
|
This is not an on-line resource but I consider Atkins Vita Nutrient Solution book to be excellent. ISBN 0-684-81849-3

Don"t be afraid to meet with a naturopath, most health store deal with them and they are specifically trained to help you with supplements needs, which ones are right for you and in what dosage. It may take time to find the right one, which can be a bit costly, but most private insurances cover the costs (In Canada).
|
Another great resource is http://www.consumerlab.com/. They test supplements to make sure they contain the ingredients they are supposed to, and they have a lot of information about supplements and which ones have good evidence that they work. Although some of the info on the site is available only by subscription, most of it is free.

Stack 5
Does anyone have much experience with this product (ephedra free)? thanks!
|
ephedra free effectiveness
To elaborate on what I posted, I have been able to buy stack II as it was not recalled for some time from where I live. As it has been recalled now I've bought Stack 5, an ephedra free product.
The first time I tried it I felt as though it had given me a boost before my workout but after a week realsie it is not doing so and what's more I've eaten the same foods and feel/see myself putting on weight. My clothes feel tighter. I'm distressed about it as workouts are not effective and I'm not at the same level of confidence in my appearance. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to again boost my metabolism and get back to being fit? |
More great info resources:
The Linus Pauling Institute has a Micronutrient page that includes many supplements. Very good information: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/contentnuts.html PDR Health has great science-based info on nutritional supplements: http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/...ugs/index.shtml And herbal medicines: http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/...ugs/index.shtml It has good sections on prescription and OTC drugs as well. |
What is the difference with green tea bags and green tea extract 300mg?
Hey PATRICA...nice to see a neighbour |
Thanks for these links!
I just read my daughter's vitamins were tested and have too much lead in the batch she's taking. NEVER would have known unless I found this info. |
Where to get nutritional info. you trust?
I become overwhelmed when I start searching for information on nutrition and nutritional supplements. Sometimes I have a hard time figuring out whose recommendations to trust- although there are certainly no lack of "experts" out on the internet! Do any of you have any sites you really like to go to? I do have Dr. Atkin's vitanutrient book, but would like some additional sources, especially to keep current with any new information.
Thanks! |
The Atkins Vita nutrients is a great book. The only problem is that it is copyrighted in 1998 -- 7 years ago. A lot has changed in 7 years.
A better book from Dr Atkins might be http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books this book seems to put it all together Websites include: http://www.vitacost.com/science/index.html http://www.worldhealth.net/p/anti-a...-reference.html as far as books My favorite low carb book http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books Nice overview of all the low carb diets and low carb dieting I would recommend Dr Ray Strand's books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books why eating a variety of foods, instead of supplements, is NOT a good idea http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books Why you need to get off (and avoid) prescription drugs and do the low carb diet, exercise, and supplements Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books Earl writes a new book every month (or so it seems) so you might want to consider his newer books which I do not have The companion book for the www.Worldhealth.Net link I gave you above. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books For type 2 diabetes / Syndrome X, Metabloic Syndrome, etc: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...4849176-6072656 Then there are the Omega 3 books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books Sears, B. The Omega Rx Zone. Regan Books (HarperCollins). New York, NY (2002) (can't find ISBN number) Then there are the Testosterone (men's health) books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...072656?v=glance http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...072656?v=glance http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...072656?v=glance http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=books&n=507846 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books Finally, there is my favorite emerging doctor: http://www.alsearsmd.com/ he has several books or sale that I highly recommend. Dr Al Sears also puts it all together - low carb, supplements, and exercise. Have fun! |
Wow!!!!! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to site all of those resources for me!!!!!!!! I REALLY appreciate it! Hopefully some others will check out this thread and get to benefit from your post. I'm especially glad you gave some book recommendations along with the websites, since I'm a real "book person" and like have lots of in depth information available.
Thanks again!!!! :wiggle: |
I apologize for posting men's stuff. I guess I saw the word "Daniel" and assumed. You know what happens when one assumes ...
The hormone stuff is very interesting. I am not sure what to recommend for the ladies -- since I have not studied that. I should say, I have studied the ladies but not ladies hormones ;). But hormones play a very powerful role in our bodies. Since insulin is a very powerful hormone in people like us -- it is important to understand the effect it plays and how to rebalance our body's hormones. Since in our bodies insulin is way too high, and then other powerful hormones start kicking in because of too much insulin, many of our other hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen are thrown way out of balance. For example, many men that feel "middle aged" may have more estrogen in their bodies then women that feel "middle aged". But the first step is the low carb diet which cuts insulin, which cuts cortisol and other hormones. Then through supplements you can rebuild the other hormones to their proper states. I feel 20 years younger. But if insulin remains high -- most likely the other hormones will remain messed up. Good luck! |
I like to go look on Pubmed and look up studies on various supplements. That way I can see all the stuff they aren't telling you because they're trying to sell you stuff.

Mary Eades (co-author of "Protein Power" has a Vitamin and Mineral book which is pretty comprehensive;
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=books&n=507846 There are also the Weston Price site and Life extension site which are also useful; http://www.westonaprice.org/healthi...upplements.html http://www.lef.org/ Cheers, Malcolm |
Here is what I was trying to remember:
I won't mention the obvious -- Dr Atkins books on low carbing but I will mention his other books. Many people are surprised to find out that Dr Atkins was as adamant about taking supplements as he was about consuming a low carb diet. BTW, if you don't want to pay the $10 per book, look in the top right corner for used. You often can get the books for $1 plus shipping. One of his first books outside low carbing was Dr. Atkins Vita Nutrient Solution. ISBN 0-684-84488-5. Excellent book but getting a little bit dated. This is one of the things I will miss most about Dr Atkins -- he won't get to update this book. The way that his "posse" has gone so politically correct -- I don't want their updates. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=glance&s=books One of Dr Atkins last great books is Dr Atkins Age Defying Diet ISBN 0-312-97701-8. This is all such great info.!!! I wonder of there is any way to eventually get this thread info attached to the "supplement information resources" sticky, or maybe it could be a sticky on its own, since there is info. on more than just supplements. (I'm not sure how that happens) There are lots of great resources here to check out. Thanks for taking the time to post all of this!!!!!!

What supplements one should take is a very individualist concern. There are numerous studies/opinions that contradict each other. I have settled upon taking a multivitamin/mineral pill and some omega 3 capsules. There is no absolute authority on what is needed or what will solve any particular problem. Read what the 'authorities' have to say and make your own decision based upon you personal goals and who you believe.

I've tried just about every herb, vitamin + mineral on the planet and have come to the following list of stuff which DOES make a big difference to me mentally:
fish oil- depression. Even if it doesn't work on its own, it seems to make everything else work much better. GLA - pmt/eczema magnesium- sleep/depression/anxiety (da bomb imo) vit C- cortisol/adrenaline control ginseng - (expensive extract only) - calm energy passiflora - much better than valerian for calmness 5htp - small doses only - depression/anxiety Valerian has the opposite effect on me - it makes me hyper. I know several people who have this experience. Loops |
Supplements vs snake-oil
Perhaps a healthy diet is really all that is necessary.
Sally Squires’ article seems rational. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...6052201426.html |
Sally Squires and the world rational shouldn't be used in the same sentence.
