'Blonde' question about whey powder!

Spurred by Demi's post about the whey powder offer at H&B, was wondering what whey powder actually is - also how do you prepare it?!?!

I really fancy getting some of the chocolate flavour and was wondering how it would taste if it were just prepared with water?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Cheers - Lindy

We use this all the time for our BFL pre-workout shakes, and it doesn't taste too horrible with water. But it's best with proper full cream milk, says Gez, and I agree. We put some glucose powder in it to help with energy during the workouts, but the sweetness really improves the shake too. You could probably use a teaspoon of Splenda instead.

The whey protein is not the best thing I've ever eaten, but I rely on it when I need to get some LC protein in fast. When I know the day is going to be hectic, I carry a shaker and some powder and just find some tap water to mix it up.

Hi Emily

thanks for that ... i think that I may poodle along to H&B tomorrow morning and purchase a tub of chocolate ...

Is it 'safe' to have on induction, and also - can it be substituted for flour in certain recipes?

Any help would be great!!! Lindy

Weigh protein is great for making cakes, try this for a quick fix:
1 egg, 4 Table spoons of splenda, 3 table spoons of ground almonds, 3 plastic measures of whey protein (any flavour), a dash of vanilla extract (optional) 100ml of water, half a tea spoon of baking powder.
Mix all up well, pour in to a microwave bowl and microwave for 3 min. serve with a bit of cream.
I personally like the Banana Whey protein.

Sure it's safe for induction, just make sure to count the carbs...not much, but on Induction every little carb counts!

I have not used PP as a flour substitute, but I know some have done it successfully.

The price at h&B is really good at the moment, but what worries me is the ingredients list. It says it contains hydrolised whey protein. Is that the same as hydrogenated fat ???? If not, what is it ? And what is Hydrolised Oligopeptide ???? This doesn't really make this product very appealing....

tholian8 Tue, Mar-09-04 10:07

Hydrolised whey protein is just a fancy way of saying "powdered." It has nothing to do with fat at all. Oligopeptides are amino acids.

Cool!!! Am going to purchase a tub of the chocolate powder tomorrow ... will be great to have shakes in the morning for brekkie!!!

Is it easy to prepare as a shake, or do you need electrical equipment?!?!?

PS - CWoody ... thanks for the recipe tip!!!!

I had a look on H&B's site the other day (I keep meaning to get to one to get some of this before the offer runs out, but haven't found the time yet :()

A 23g (scoop) serving contains these carbs:-

Chocolate 2.5g
Vanilla 1.9g
Strawberry 1.9g
Banana 1.8g

Obviously not a major deal if you're having one scoop a day, but if you're having multiple they can soon add up - remember to count them! :)

While having a look round (buying L-Carnitine), I found Reflex Whey at Affordable Suplements http://www.affordablesupplements.co....asp?prodid=404 - dearer than H&B's current offer, but cheaper than their normal price (and free P&P) - it's 1g carb per serving and comes in a wider variety of flavours.

I haven't tried either yet (in that I've not gotten around to buying either yet!), but I've heard people say bad things about the taste of H&B's whey, in particular the chocolate, but these were not LC people so they wont have tastebuds adjusted the same as us :)

I rather like the H&B whey. However, if you are hoping that a whey protein shake will taste just like a milk shake, then you will find the taste different to what you might be expecting.

It could also be because they are not very sweet (which I prefer). I bought a huge tub of Designer French Vanilla Whey over the internet, only to find that it was really sweet - I'll keep it to use just for cooking, but for shakes it's not very nice.

nitwit Wed, Mar-10-04 11:03

I bought a tub today of the chocolate whey from H&B ... it is actually very nice, although I did make it up with about 250mls of water and just a touch of cream ... put it in a large glass over lots of ice cubes ... Demi, you are right - it is much better ice cold!!!!

I dont think I will use it as a brekkie substitute at the moment as I prefer eating something, but would be good as a mid-afternoon snack!!!!

yum, yum!!!! Lindy

PS - Doogieb ... the offer runs until the 25th March so there is still plenty of time!!!!

doogieb Wed, Mar-10-04 12:19

Ah, excellent, thanks nitwit :)

I'm hoping to make it to an H&B on Friday to pick some up.

RCFletcher Tue, Mar-16-04 15:10

I also bought a tub of chocolate and I think it's really nice too - and when made with water I can have it on Stillman's too - cool.

I'm going to get the vanilla and strawberry before they sell out.

H&B are doing well out of the low carb boom methinks!

doogieb Thu, Mar-18-04 10:32

Finally managed to get a hold of some - I have chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. It'd be better if they were lower carb, but the Reflex ones which I'll probably start to get when the offer runs out (I think someone said next Thursday) are 1 carb per serving in other flavours.

RCFletcher Thu, Mar-18-04 11:24

I have also bought all three now. They differ. I think the chocolate one is really good and makes excellent shakes. The strawberry is foul (but I'll eat it now I've bought it). I've just opened the vanilla and tried to make my usual flaxmeal porridge with it instead of my usual soya protein: total disaster! It tastes OK but it's gone into big cloggy lumps.

Let us know which one you prefer Doogie.

nitwit Thu, Mar-18-04 11:32

I have also re-stocked whilst the offer is on at H&B ... bought another tub of the chocolate and a tub of vanilla ... I am not really a fan of strawberry flavours (only like the real thing!) so didnt bother to buy any!!!

Have yet to try the vanilla, although will give it a whirl before I go to bed ... I do love the chocolate flavour, although I also experimented with it with disatrious results!!! Thought that it might be nice as a hot chocolate ... wrong!!! It went all lumpy and hideous ... yucky!!! Makes me want to gag just thinking about it!!!!

RCFletcher Thu, Mar-18-04 13:01

It might work if you make it cold with a blender as usual and then warm it in the microwave?

I buy cocoa powder and make myself a cup of cocoa most evenings. It's better than so called hot chocolate anyway.

doogieb Fri, Mar-19-04 06:58

Hmmmm.... I can't really say for sure which one I like best! I've generally just been using all 3 equally (well I got the vanilla on it's own first so that got hit hardest first) - normally just whisking with either water or water and double cream to make a nice milkshake, although the strawb I made last night when I'd ran out of double cream wasn't nearly as good as with cream in it.

If I manage to get a hold of some linseeds at the weekend (that's what you said flaxseed was in this country, yeah?) I'll possibly try to make breakfast cereal stuff, if not, I'll order some more Keto brand stuff soon :)

SylviaUK Sat, Mar-20-04 16:18

I bought the Vanilla today (got the last tub in the branch ;)) and am planning on trying it tomorrow.

Question: has anyone made a shake using soya milk instead of water and cream? If so, was it OK? Thanks :D

suleika Sat, Mar-20-04 16:39

I thought the soya milk actually added something rather nice to the taste of the chocolate shake. I can't remember about the vanilla, but I imagine it will be fine.

I tried soya milk after I decided to lay off the cow milk every other day, which had been giving me catarrh problems - not good for a professional singer. Anyway, soon after that I started experimenting with water instead, and I dropped the soya milk. I was only using the shakes before and after heavy weights workouts (BFL), so I was adding some carbs (dextrose) which actually improved the flavour very much. You could try some sucralose. And all of the shakes, especially if added to only water, improve with a little cream, so if it's only the lactose you are avoiding you could do this too.

SylviaUK Sat, Mar-20-04 16:51

Thanks, suleika :) I think I'll try two variations, one with water and a little cream and the other with soya milk and decide which suits me best. I bought the soya milk several months ago and it's been sitting in my fridge unopened staring at me reproachfully everytime I go in there ever since :D I can't even remember why I bought it, but it seems a shame not to use it

doogieb Sat, Mar-20-04 17:13

Let us know how you get on with whey & soy milk SylviaUK - I've only ever bought soy milk once, took one drink and poured it down the sink! But if it's better than water + cream for whey shakes, then I'll get it instead.

SylviaUK Sun, Mar-21-04 17:16

I will, doogieb. I haven't tried either yet though - decided to let the unfortunate effects of my first Atkins bar disappear before introducing my poor insides to another unfamiliar product ;)

I have tried the vanilla and I like that too, although have to admit that the chocolate is my fav ... have started to make mine much thicker, and they are dangerously good!!!

I think I will stick to making them quite watery so they last longer and are not as more'ish!!!!

I make mine up with water, and even a dash of cream (I use whipping) makes all the difference!!!
