New Pria Bars

Power bar now makes a LC Pria, and I have to say they are the best LC bars I have ever tasted. My mom got a box at Costco, and I'm going there myself to pick some up.
The only problem is they are too good! It will be hard not to eat the whole box in one sitting.
Has anyone else tried them?

i bought 5 boxes at coscto, 18 bars for 21, they are deeelicious!

MrFrumble Mon, Jan-12-04 02:32

The best bars I've ever had. Peanut Butter Caramel is the best of all I think.

LadyBelle Mon, Jan-12-04 22:13

I looked at them, but they had way way too much sugar alcohols for me.

I get the regular pria bars for my son. They have no sugar alcohols and are by far the lowest in sugar of any bar I've seen.

what are the carb counts on the LC Pria bars ?

What do you consider too many? I think they are great but I also want to stay away from sugar alcohol.

These are amazing!!! I've only tried the peanut butter caramel, but they are so good!!! 2 net carbs per bar.

Skinny Jim Mon, Feb-09-04 11:31

Yeah, I agree, they are the best tasting I've tried, but they contain bad fats.

acipenser Mon, Feb-09-04 11:42

i tried them. didn't really like them. the bottom half is too blah tasking and all the goey caramely stuff on top doesn't feel nutricious enough. if you are using them as a candy bar sub, probably okay, but as a protein bar.., in my mind not substantial enough.

Ellipsis Mon, Feb-09-04 17:32

My sweetie picked up a box of these yesterday at Costco...we're both really pleased with them! They taste fantastic, indeed, and I appreciate the low net-carb count.

My only "complaint" is that they aren't, well, as *dry* as some of the other LC bars I've had...makes my water-drinking goals a bit more difficult to achieve! I could easily down a couple liters while eating one of those dry LC bars! ;)

They are probably the only "treat" with sugar alcohols that didn't cause Mt. Vesuvius to erupt. Really nice with a cup of tea after dinner at the weekend.

Costco

I agree that these bars are good, I eat them for dessert every now and then because they are damn good. Peanut Butter Caramel is my favorite. I was looking through the Costco "wallet coupons" and coming up Feb23-Feb29 there is a coupon to save $10 of the Pria Carb Select Variety Pack. That's a good deal! -Steve

i dont think the pria bars have the bad fat (trans fats) in them..it actually lists trans fats on the nutrition label and it says 0 next to it

Skinny Jim Tue, Feb-17-04 12:29

Fractionated palm kernal oil as an ingredient, though I don't know just how much they put in to qualify as being trans-fat free. You are right, however, for the label says transfat free.

Here is the ingredient list:

INGREDIENTS: Maltitol Syrup, TriSource™ Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate (from milk), Calcium Caseinate (from milk), Soy Protein Isolate), Glycerin, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Water, Peanuts, Alkalized Cocoa, Unsweetened Chocolate, Natural Flavor, Soy Lecithin, Almond Butter, Polydextrose, Oat Fiber, Sodium Caseinate (from milk), Cream, Nonfat Dry Milk, Butter, Monoglycerides, Salt, Disodium Phosphate, Carrageenan, Sucralose, Peanut Flour.

Believe me, if I would feel good about that particular ingredient, I would buy these puppies regularly. Thanks for replying, and I will research this product a little more carefully. These bars are the BEST!

Something Else...

I also came across this statement in their FAQ webpage:

7: Does Pria™ Carb Select™ have any trans fat?

Pria™ Carb Select™ bars do not contain trans fat. Trans fatty acids are substances that, depending on intake and total dietary patterns, can raise total blood cholesterol levels, and can raise LDL ("bad") cholesterol and lower HDL ("good") cholesterol. By 2006, the FDA is requiring all food manufacturers to include trans fat in the Nutrition Facts box on product labels. See the Nutrition Facts on the label for more nutrition information.

I am addicted to these, they are WAY better than any full carb bar out there.

cathafer46 Wed, Feb-18-04 08:46

is fractioned oil the same as hydrogenated?

Skinny Jim Wed, Feb-18-04 12:19

I do not really know. I have done a search on the internet, but all I really found on Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil was Dr. Weil's website, but take it with a grain of salt, for Dr. Weil can be flaky on health issues (like weight loss, for he could use a little less carbs, if you know what I mean) Here what he says:

Today's Question
Tropical Oils: What’s Healthy? What’s Not?

In the past few years, I’ve noticed an influx of “health” foods containing fractionated palm oil. How is this different from regular palm oil and from palm kernel oil? Is it healthier?

You’ve asked a good question about a rather confusing subject. The African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) or its American hybrid variety (Elaeis oleifra) is widely cultivated in tropical areas and produces a fleshy fruit from which two oils are extracted: (1) palm oil from the fruit and (2) palm kernel oil from the pit. Both contain a lot of saturated fat, but of the two, palm oil is the healthier of the two, both because it has less saturated fat and because it has high antioxidant activity from a significant content of natural vitamin E (including both tocopherols and tocotrienols). It can also be extracted gently by pressing the pulpy fruit.

Rees Moerman, product engineer at Spectrum Naturals, a California company, which sells high quality expeller-pressed oils, tells me that unlike palm oil, palm kernel oil can’t be obtained organically. Instead, the oil must be extracted from the pit with a gasoline-like hydrocarbon solvent. In short, palm kernel oil is a cheap, unhealthy fat, and I recommend avoiding food products containing it.

Fractionation is a further phase of palm oil processing, designed to extract and concentrate specific fatty acid fractions. Fractionated palm oil, as found in food products, has a higher concentration of saturated fat than regular palm oil and is used for the convenience of manufacturers who like its stability and melting characteristics. The healthful aspects of natural palm oil are largely lost in the process. I’ve noticed that fractionated palm oil is now a common ingredient in many power bars sold in health-food stores.

The bottom line is that of all these oils, organic, minimally processed palm oil is the healthiest, followed by conventionally processed palm oil. Palm kernel oil is less healthy still, and fractionated palm oil is the least desirable.

I give these bars a thumbs up

Does anyone know what factionated palm kernal oi is? I suppose it is somehow different that hydroganated since thew label lists no trans fats.

They make a nice quick breakfast with a little added protein since they only have 10 grams and that's a bit on the low side for an energy bar. On the flip side, the calorie content is not bad either.

Peanutbuter-Carmel is my favorite too.

These are the only reason the Atkin's is hard for me!!! I AM ADDICTED TO THE PEANUT BUTTER CARMEL NUT BARS!! I eat two of them most days...expensive if nothing else!! I don't buy the variety packs because I don't like the brownie flavor or the cookie flavor nearly as much as the peanut butter one. I pick them up at Walmart for $1.37 each, not too bad unles you eat them every day. I think giving up a 35 year Coca-Cola habit might not be as hard as limiting my intake of these. :nono: I just have to keep telling myself: "I WILL NOT STOP BY WALMART TODAY, I WILL NOT".... you get the picture!
