What's on your COSTCO shopping list?

I live way up north in Manitoba and only get to do a major shop for groceries a few times per year. I am going to Winnipeg next week and I'm trying to prepare for all the running around and shopping that I'm going to do. I love Costco, because I can buy in bulk and that's what I need for up there. Any suggestions about Costco must have's on other low carber lists?

I am already planning to get some frozen shrimp, atlantic salmon and those 2kg packs of hot wings that are low carb. So besides the basic meat section, any Costco low carb goodies that you all always pick up or keep on your list? Very interested in getting some new ideas, and unfortunately am always rushing around when I get a chance to go there.

Thanks in advance,

Mari

Costco just recently started carrying lc products - shakes, and the new Oroweat lc bread which I find tastier than normal lc bread since it is made primarily with wheat flour instead of gluten (still only 6 carbs too!). The bread is in packs of 2 loafs for $3.98 here, so you can freeze one while you eat the other.

As for regular food, I also buy my cheese there, as well as eggs, pepperoni, avocados, bulk packs of meat (mostly chuck roast - Costco has the BEST chuck that makes the most tender pot roast... mmmmmm), tuna, peanut butter, mayo and other condiments, and nuts. Also, if you are in OWL and eating fruit, I like to get their big bags of frozen mixed berries. I use them with a little vanilla Soy Slender to make smoothies. Mm Mm good :)

Happy shopping!

I haven't seen any low carb products at my Costco but I do get cheese sticks, peanuts, spinach, broccoli, bacon, eggs, red yellow green peppers, Chicken wings, Chicken tenders, tuna, philly cream cheese in one ounce packages. Thats about all I can think of right now.

I don't have a Cosco but I do have a Sam's with many of the same type of items. In addition to the bulk cheeses (which freeze well), pistachios, and frozen chicken breasts/ fish, I found a frozen shrimp that is called "Big Shrimp". It is delicious. The big shrimp is butterflied larg shrimp already seasoned in a butter garlic sauce. You just pop the frozen shrimp on the bbq for a quick and delicious entree. And best of all...NO carbs.

Wendy you might want to check fitday for carbs in shrimp, I was suprized that they do have carbs!!!

I also shop at Costco here in the UK - obviously some products etc will be different, but my favourite buy from Costco is the Chicken Caesar sandwich filling - chicken and bacon with spring onions in a caesar mayonnaise dressing at 0.4g ecc per 100g. They also do a Louisiana Tuna Melt filler, which is delicious as well.

Oh boy! My favorite place! Let's see, I'll mentally walk through the isles . . . .

frozen chicken breasts
frozen burgers
fresh beef, usually flank steak or stew meat
pork chops
scallops (they are HUGE!)
asparagus
portabello mushrooms
onions
salad lettuce
green peppers
frozen broccoli
cheese and more cheese
5 lb bag of pepperoni
sour cream
heavy cream
cream cheese
butter
eggs
Splenda (700 packets for $13!!! Compared to $9 for 200 at the regular store)
macadamia nuts
bottled water
vitamins/suppliments
jeans that are a size smaller that what's in my closet! :)

Can you tell I LOVE this place?!

luddybell Fri, Jan-02-04 08:26

wow... ok i definately want one of these around here :: pouts:: ... UGH... although we do have a sams club... but its not the same!! LOL

Their 6lb bag of frozen strawberries are great. Sometimes we even eat them partially frozen and don't use whipped cream. I think they freeze them individually since you can take out as many as you want, not a big clump. Also butter, heavy cream, eggs, string cheese (for the kids lunch), salad mix, smoked salmon, almonds. Some people really like the already cooked bacon. Have fun, Maureen

I'm definately going to have to check out that Orowheat low carb bread. What a great price! Been buying it at Trader Joes at twice the price for a very small loaf. Also, the whey protein sounds good, but I'm not sure where to look for it. Is it in the pharmacy section?

Thanks

girljock21 Sat, Jan-03-04 18:30

what is whey protein and what do you use it for?

otenn Sat, Jan-03-04 22:08

Some of these suggestions are great. I'm not sure if the American and Canadian Costco stores will carry the same things...never mind the UK! But that chicken ceasar filling sounds so good!

I always have a hard time buying pepperoni... I love it, but always worry about fillers with carby bases...is there a brand name to look for?

I am also curious about the whey protein and how people use it. Just for shakes? or for cooking in general?

I'm adding to my list...thanks for your responses.

I buy the Hormel pepperoni at Costco. I believe it's labled as zero carbs but has one hidden carb per serving. I'm sure it's got nitrates or whatnot too. I've been eating it EVERY morning for breakfast with cheese since I started this WOE though and no problems. Could be a YMMV thing.

I have been using my whey protein vanilla in shakes but I am sure there are recipes we can use it in also...I am also in Canada and the brand I find at Costco is, R&L Health Vanilla Whey Protein .... Hope you find it, its not bad tasting compared to some of the others I have tasted and it blends well (no lumps)......Julie

I like the carndo pepperoni best. It has no sugar but it has nitrites. It lists as 0 carbs I count it as 0.5 per serving. I love it fried up with eggs. Applegate farms makes no nitrite pepperoni that I get sometimes but I dont like it as much.

One product I really love at Costco is Greta's Garlic Sauce. This stuff makes everything taste great. Add 1 Tbsp to 3 oz cream cheese and use it to fill your celery sticks. Wow! I use it as a topping for broiled fish - fantastic. I add it to ground beef for great hamburgers and meatballs. Place boneless chicken breasts in a shallow pan with a little water to steam them. Spoon on some Greta's and cover. It's low fat, low carb, and delicious. Add it to shrimp cooked in butter and you have great scampi. That one's not low fat, but its still low carb and yummy. You can add it to stir fry vegetables for a great taste too! Or steam your vegetables and add cream cheese recipe at the top for a delicious cream sauce to jazz them up. I use it to spike up anything that tastes bland or boring, and I've never been disappointed. I got a recipe for spinach quiche cups from the South Beach Diet and added a little Greta's for flavor. It's a very low carb dish that works for Atkins too. Can't believe the improvement a Tbsp of Greta's made.

In addition to everything else thats been said..

Their smoked atlantic salmon is so cheap and sooo good!
Also, if your costco carries it, the "Manchego" cheese is just amazing.

Mari,
I hope you still get this message...
I'm in Winnipeg, so I know that you can pick up the stuff I buy at costco ;)
I buy fresh chicken wings there myself, I didn't look at their premade ones, I'm surprised the carbs are so good!
I also get some Talking Rain drinks, they are sweetened with splenda, like fruity pop. They also have a large package of pork puffs, if you like those. I haven't seen the bread or any lc tortilla's, but to tell you the truth, I avoid the bakery section!
I use the whey protein in baking (didn't buy it at Costco but I will in the future) and they have a great deal on a big bag of whole almonds, which you can roast at home. I bought a bottle of buttermilk ranch dressing, and boy was it delicious. Fruit teas, if you're looking for alternatives to water... They have a good price on atkins bars too, if you want to keep those on hand... Just take your time going through the store and look at everything, especially if you aren't getting into the city often.
Let me know how you did!

Low Carb Drinks

Hi,
Went to Costco recently and found a lot of low carb drinks. They now sell the "No Carbohydrate" Diet Arizona Tea in blueberry green tea and white grape green tea. It's sweeted with Splenda and comes in a large glass bottle. There's about 12 bottles per box.

They also have bottled sparking sodas by Crystal Bay in peach, raspberry, blueberry, etc (about 4-6 different flavors). It is also sweetened with Splenda. There's about 30 bottles per box.

Great stuff!

In addition to the things already listed I buy:

2.5# jars of roasted cashews - best I've ever tasted, and good alternative for high-carb junk food for the rest of the family
large bags pecans
chicken sausages
brats
Italian sausage
whole roasted chickens
Proscuitto panino - proscuitto and mozzerella cheese rolled up together
sliced Butterball turkey (in frozen section)
meatballs (have some carbs, but they're so easy and the kids love them)
red wine

I'll have to look for the orowheat low-carb bread. I'm currently using Nature's Own, which I buy at the grocery store. It tastes like regular whole wheat bread, not that funky soy spongy taste like the Atkins bread.

You can use whey protein in LC muffins and breads along with flax seed. Don't forget the pork rinds, spices, risotta cheese for lasagna, lunch meat for snacking, avocados, Diet Rite (soda w/out asparatame or sodium), tea, and a big ham. You may also consider ordering from vitaglo.com - cheapest place on the web to buy LC products such as stevia (sweetner), LC pasta, bread, cereals, supplements, soy flour, LC tortillas, etc.
