Anyone eating nuts???

I love nuts, so I'm wondering if they are ok to eat? I was looking at a package of peanuts and the carb count is 9, with the fiber count being 5. That sounds good to me

erbadger Wed, May-14-03 12:23

after induction yes.

watchout though, they are really addictive! I don't buy them anymore because I eat far more than the serving. They stall people, but mostly due to the addictive, yummy properties!!!!

pegva Wed, May-14-03 12:23

nUTS

If you're on induction... you should stay away from them for now.

Other nuts are better than peanuts (remember peanuts aren't nuts... they're legumes). Macadamias and pecans are quite low in carbs.

Nuts are the best part of maintenance. Yummy to snack on, and satisfy my salty cravings!

Skamito Wed, May-14-03 12:25

What phase of the Atkins program are you on? Nuts are one of the first things I added when starting OWL. The trick is to keep portions in control!

The best are macadamia nuts due to their low carb and high fat content.

Yes, eat nuts, but keep it in moderation. A 1oz serving of nuts is actually quite small. I force myself to stick to individual serving bags or I get in trouble.

LCBarbara Wed, May-14-03 12:37

Macadamia, almonds, walnuts, and pecan all are about 1g. carb per oz. I sometimes grab a handful for a snack or with a salad for lunch. Great source of good fat & some protein!

I just wish those macadamia nuts weren't so doggone expensive!

Nuts!

Nuts were responsible for a major stall in induction. Now even in maintenance I only buy the $0.99 or $1.19 type packets of nuts. I do not buy the Wall mart Special big can and take it home. I ca not stop eating them :D

orzabelle Wed, May-14-03 13:20

Unsalted walnuts are something that I love in a salad, but won't eat by the handful as a snack. They are great in salads, especially at lunch, and I'm sure they help keep me full between meals. I think they've kept me from eating too many calories b/c they are nice and filling.

Redfallon Wed, May-14-03 13:56

I sometimes add a spoonful or two of sunflower seeds to a salad. If I buy the jar, I eat way too many. I was very wary of eating peanuts (the whole legume thing), but when I have nothing to eat at a "snacky" time, and have forgotten to bring something to work from home, it's the safest thing in the snack machine! Now if only they would start putting pork rinds in there! I should find some walnuts or the like to bring to work. I used to love those as a kid.

What does everyone think of cashews as far as how many to have, are they better/worse than peanuts, etc. I don't know if cashews are legumes or not.

tgill32177 Wed, May-14-03 14:27

Whose nuts?

I prefer- Walnuts, macadamia and sunflower.

I don't get the macadamia very often. I do buy the big bag of walnuts from Sams and share with my BIL cause he is doing LC too. We pack them in ziplocs and take them to work. I DARE the two-legged squirrels in my house to touch them! They are mine! If they want some they can have a smidge and only if I say. If I didn't they would have the whole bag gone!

I didn't touch a nut though when doing induction. (At least not the edible type). :D

I love to eat sunflowers seeds!I only buy shelled ones bc I don't eat as many that way!

debmarjs Wed, May-14-03 15:38

I eat Macadamia nuts and sunflower seeds, yummy.

hippygal Wed, May-14-03 15:45

been to scared

to eat nuts. I would over do it! I know it. :(

Birddog Wed, May-14-03 16:11

No, nuts while on induction. I truly love nuts. Macadamia nut, walnuts, almonds and pecans. But be careful they are additive. I had to stop buying them for a while because I went into a stall. I was indulging just a little to much. They are almost too delicious.

Javy Wed, May-14-03 16:43

LOVE the macadamian nuts, but I try to stay away from the peanuts because they, to me, are very addictive and lots of them contain sugar.

Kathy54 Wed, May-14-03 17:27

Right, none during induction, then limited after, I useally measure out how many, then put the rest right out of site. What I see is what I get. lol.

I buy the snack zip bags and carry a few Mac nut in my purse for emergency, even that I pre-measure.

These stall me too much if I'm aiming for less than 50 carbs/day. Plus I can't stop eating them.

I found some super-spicy peanuts I use for PMS emergencies, though. Keeps me away from bbq potato chips, a particular weakness of mine.

mrschmelz Wed, May-14-03 21:09

I need to quit buying nuts. Everytime I buy a can of macadamia nuts I eat AT LEAST half the container, which is 2.5 ounces. And at about $1 per ounce, they aren't the cheapest thing to consume all the time.

fishfish Wed, May-14-03 21:22

Echoing other posts, I have trouble limiting quantity of nuts; for me, they are addictive. Also they are incredibly high in calories, which may or may not matter to you. Many nutritionists and dieticians think they are very good for you, containing the "good" fats as well as fiber.

candyapple Wed, May-14-03 21:42

:exclm: I dont know what I was reading but I thought nuts were okay. No wonder Ive been stalled for 2 days. What a waste of time over a dumb bunch of peanuts. Im so mad right now. Can somebody please refer me to the most updated and revised version of the atkins book because my version is from 1992. I need to buy one anyhow, this one belongs to the library. LOL

And to think that I just posted a question on why I'm stalled. I don't even want to think about what everyone is going to reply with.

pegva Thu, May-15-03 08:08

Candy,

two days is NOT a stall... don't sweat it!!!!!!

:D

Groggy60 Thu, May-15-03 09:45

From the first day, I have eaten all the pecans I want. Half a cup has 3.6 net carbs with 5.6g of fiber. Its a low-carb diet, not a no-carb diet.

Keeps me very regular, I use no other fiber supplements.

saltnpeppa Thu, May-15-03 10:06

the mac nuts I've seen are salte dand I don't know what else is on the (a major Hawaiin brand..). Are those ok, or are we only allowed plain uncoated nuts?

TexLady Thu, May-15-03 10:10

I eat 1 oz. of roasted peanuts (4 carbs) when I get hungry in the afternoons at work. I only buy them from the vending machine, not in cans, because then I would be tempted to eat too many.

LCBarbara Thu, May-15-03 11:01

Attention Macadamia Nut lovers:

CVS drug stores often run sales on their private label dry roasted nuts. The sale price is $2.50/12.5 oz. jar. Much more reasonable than the MaunaLoa premium brand. I've also found a good sale at Kroger too. You might find them at a better price, in bulk, at a health food store or large grocer.

Dr. Atkins loved Macadamia nuts and sang their praises in his last interview with Larry King in January. He said he often grabbed a handful as a quick lunch on the run.
