I stick mainly to whole foods (chicken, dairy, etc. which I get at Cosco, and veggies), but my favourite treat is the Breyer's chocolate low-carb ice cream. I've found it for the best price at Loblaw's, but they are often out of stock lately -- hope they aren't phasing it out! IGA also carries the ice cream, but it is 1$ more per carton.

Teva on Decarie boul (the east side at Queen Mary Rd.) has a lot of options as well, although I don't buy things regularly. One of the people at Teva (Steven) follows Paleo, so he knows quite a bit about low carb, he used to tell me all the time when I was on WW that I should be eating low carb, not low fat/high carb :agree:

Other than that, if I feel the need for an Advantage bar, I get them at Maxi because they are 3/5$ which is the most reasonable I've seen.

Loblaw's also has a lot of prepackaged low-carb foods (like frozen entrees), but I personally stay away from anything like that.

low carbing in Montreal

Hi. That's a great page. I didn't know about Canada Snacks. If you like, I can add a few more things.

Orowheat Carb Counters bread is available at the Provigo on Sherbrooke and Cavendish in NDG.

Bon Matin Carb Reduction bread is available at all Metro and IGA stores.

Loblaws carries the full line of Carb Options products, including ketchup, marinades, peanut butter, pasta sauces.

A good Canadian internet store is feelgreatfoods.ca. They have a very wide selection of items, and shipping is only $5.95, and free if your order is $100.00 or more.

Cherie.

thanks clk!

THANKS CLK!!!
I'll add them to my page. I didn't know about the bread, I'll have to check it out.
However, I did know about feelgreatfoods.ca and I have omitted them intentionally. I've had several problems with them over the last few months. Items are not as described or even looking at all like the picture they provide. :nono: Crackers, bread and chips were crushed due to the "mom & pop" style packing. :nono: Items missing from shipment. :nono: And even though you select an item you never know until it arrives that they even have it in stock. :nono: And finally, they give me big time attitude with rude and poor customer service.  <-- way down! Check out the other online stores. They're much better! Cheers!

HI, great page! Thanks for putting it all together, it will be very helpful for newbies.

My addition :) Breyer's low-carb ice cream is available at IGA and at Loblaw's and is my absolute favourite low-carb treat!

patricia1 Wed, Apr-13-05 10:29

Great initiative!

I've seen chocolate and vanilla readily available at Loblaw's and IGA, but the chocolate is SO good that it is sometimes more difficult to find because they are often sold out. Guess you can tell that chocolate is my favourite flavour :yum:

The Breyer's doesn't have that sugar alcohol or splenda aftertaste that I find a lot of other low-carb desserts have (IMO). I've passed the chocolate off to non-low-carbers and they didn't really notice that it wasn't regular ice cream ;)

brpssm Tue, Apr-19-05 11:00

thanks again, jrdomino for putting the site together!

I was just wondering from anyone who has bought the DaVinci syrups from Q-Bec Coffee Services in Lasalle -- can you just go there, or do you call in an order and pick it up or do they deliver? I'm thinking about getting some and it is a very slight detour on my way home from work.

CalicoCat Tue, Apr-19-05 11:50

Hi brpssm,

Usually, I just go there and see what they have in stock. They have a good selection of flavours but not always the same flavours. Be sure to take the sugar-free version, they have both the regular and the sugar free.

The last time I went there, they had Dulce de Leche flavour, it was great! I am getting a little low on that, I need to go soon.

What flavours are you trying this time?

brpssm Wed, Apr-20-05 10:45

Thanks for responding and thanks for the tip that some are not sugar-free, that would have been bad!

I'm not sure what I am going to get since I've never tried them before. I was thinking of trying the vanilla one and maybe a hazelnut or something like that. Do you have any suggestions??

No, I didn't make it there yet(!).

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, low-carb bread that is affordable (i.e. not the health food store's $8/loaf!)? I was buying the Bon Matin Low-Carb bread but it has disappeared from the shelves where I live. Does anyone know if it is still available maybe in or around the city, or did they stop making it?

As a replacement (because I really don't eat a lot of bread), I've been having 1/2 slice of the Bon Matin Double Son bread, 7g per 1/2 slice. My friend said the Bon Matin Flaxseed is even lower in carbs, so I'm going to try that one next, but I think both of them have sugars in them, so if anyone knows of a good specifically low-carb bread I'd love to hear about it!

Beebuzz Sat, Jul-09-05 21:05

If I rememder correctly, the Bon Matin Flaxseed is 9 carbs per slice. I saw it at loblaws.

Got to get some some Da Vinci syrup soon, im almost out.

Thanks Beebuzz. My friends told me about the flaxseed as well, I looked at the nutritional info on the weekend and will probably buy it this week...it's 11g total, 2 fibre. Right now I am slicing a double son in half, so it is about 5.5g net, 9g might be too high, but I guess I could half the flaxseed as well.

jrdomino Wed, Jul-13-05 04:14

low cal bon martin

they also make a low cal bread that is really high in fiber with only 9grams of carbs. i've bought it at iga. ive also noticed the Low carb one vanished from the shelves. I guess the low carb thing never really cought on here in montreal. too bad, it really works!

I saw the low-cal bread but I found that for the size of the slice as compared to the double son, it was high in carbs. maybe I read the label wrong...

At least there are options, and probably not having access to too many of the low-carb foods is good for us in the long run anyway.
