Anyone want to walk around the world?

I picked up my afternoon kids yesterday, and Lucy proudly told me that her class had just finished running to Cape Reinga. Which is the northernmost point of NZ. We live in Wellington which I think is about 900km away.
It seems their teacher had them all running around the track each day, and they added up the total mileage of the whole class over a period and found they had run the equivalent of 900k.

I thought if we add up the metres we walk each day, we might be able to walk a long way between us. I suppose the thing to do would be to add your total on to the previous total so we keep it running. Does that make sense? The problem is do we do it in miles or K's if we do it in miles someone will have to tell me how many yds in a mile. I learnt it at school but since we converted to metric I've forgotten

Feather, what a cool idea!!

MisterE Thu, May-29-03 06:16

1st: I think your idea is brilliant. What a great added motivational tool to make walking fun. Everybody clocks in their miles/kilometers daily or weekly and as a group we get to watch the tally climb toward an around the world walk!

2nd: Due to health conditions I will not be able to add much in the beginning. But thru things like this, I expect to be able to add to the productive total before it's thru!

Count my hobbling butt in!

szar Thu, May-29-03 07:10

Sounds like a great idea!

1 kilometer = 0.6 miles
and
1 mile = 1.6 kilometers

So to go from kilometers to miles multiply the numeber of kilometers by .6 and you have miles. Multiply the number of miles by 1.6 and you have kilometers.

Miles to Kilometers converter

I think this is a great idea-- I always wanted to be a world traveller!

Yea, for the internet! Always looking for that shortcut & found this link to convert miles to kilometers (or vice versa).

Miles/Kilometers Converter

Can we count the distance we travel on the various gym machines-- glider, rower, bike??

DarB Thu, May-29-03 10:45

Sounds like a fun idea, how are we going to keep track??
I can't do much right now due to an injury, but will hopefully improve over time, and be able to contribute more.

MsTCB Thu, May-29-03 12:24

Count me in, too!

Feather, this is a great idea.
I took my first walk outside yesterday. I only could go 2 city blocks. So, I won't be able to add much to the grand total each day--at least not at first. My back hurts so much when I walk.

But, this will make me feel like I'm walking in a group with you all at my side.

I LOVE THIS IDEA.

I live in Kentucky-USA and we use miles, but I would be glad to convert to kilometers each day.
I just bought myself a pedometer and I can set it for meters or miles.

Just let us know where to report the numbers each day.

feather Thu, May-29-03 14:30

Cool I'm pleased you all want to join in. Of course we should count machines. I'm rushing off to work to day I did .78m 1.3k
So I guess the next post should just add theirs to the total. Perhaps someone more internet savvy could come up with a better way.
Total to Date. 78m 1.3k

MisterE Thu, May-29-03 16:15

Here goes, Folx!

"The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,901.55 miles (40,075.16 kilometers )"

Got some serious walking to do! Get out the walking shoes and put the Walkman on and step to it!

hatetocook Thu, May-29-03 21:11

New total: 3.7 km

I did 1.5 miles on the glider & rower tonight, which the handy-dandy converter says is 2.4 kilometers.

Signey Fri, May-30-03 20:50

Me too! Me Too!

Can I ride my stationary bike? I wanna ride around the world!

What a cool idea. Count me in!

feather Sat, May-31-03 18:35

Hi Signey & Dewdropt
I think we should be able to count anything that uses muscle power and involves distance. So definitely stationery cycles count. I'm just annoyed that I did about 20min at the gym on one and forgot to remember the distance. I did 2.6k on the treadmill this morning.

How do I get the notepad at the top?? (Whatever I did it worked  )
New Total 6.3k

oldie Sat, May-31-03 19:56

:spin: :spin:
Add in my 9k from this week.

:hyper: :hyper::hyper:

New Total 15.3k (9.18ml)

Signey Sat, May-31-03 21:50

3.5 miles

Add in my 3.5 miles on the bike today. :D
9.18 miles + 3.5 miles = 12.68 miles
14.77 K + 5.63 K = 20.40 K
I hope I did this right.
Signey :)

hatetocook Sun, Jun-01-03 18:41

Did 2.4 K more on the cross trainer & rowing, so I guess our new total is 22.8 K. Does that take us very far in NZ feather?

Dewdropt Mon, Jun-02-03 00:02

Only did a mile today. I'll post at the end of the week with a longer distance.

feather Mon, Jun-02-03 04:08

Hi fellow amblers (I don't do power walking yet!!). Hate to Cook, how can you do that far on the Xtrainer. I just about did myself a mischeif after only 5min on it. Hope to build up to 6min this week. As for the rower, I'm scared I won't fit on it yet.
22.8k gets me 1/2 way home for the weekend. No small feat.
What do you think of the idea of residual fitness. About 4 years ago I decided I needed to walk. I set out from home and got about 200 metres (yards) and was totally burned out. I wasn't power walking either. Each day I tried to go a few feet further. Within about 6months I could manage about a 5k amble. I took my dog and I had to stop and pat her a lot. Anyway the point is (I do get to the point eventually). That I hadn't done much walking for the last 2 years, but this time I'm finding that I am getting fitter much quicker. Someone said this is due to residual fitness. What do you think? I'm about 30lb heavier now too.

Did 2.6k on treadmill today so now we're at 25.4k (Closer to Home)

hatetocook Mon, Jun-02-03 06:39

Hi Feather!

I've never heard of residual fitness but it certainly could be true in my case. This is the 3rd time I've gone on a 'join the gym & get fit' kick. The first time, I too could only do about 5 minutes on the cross-trainer and, even after 9 months, could only do 30 minutes if I split it. The last time, I added aerobics but still never got above about 15 minutes at Level 1. Now, after about 2 months, I'm go 22 minutes at Level 2, in addition to the 10 minutes on the rower. I'd like to think my 2 'failed' attempts at fitness did at least help me succeed this time.

BTW feather, I know that rower seat looks small, but I'm much more comfortable on that than I am on a bike. It helps to have someone show you how to use it & watch you on it to make sure you have the right posture. It's definately worth a try-- I've lost 5 inches from my waist since March & I think the rower is the main reason why.

Will try to add to our total today.

Tiggerdy Mon, Jun-02-03 13:47

This is just such a neat idea, I had to see if I could join in! I walk everyday to/from my car at work (5 mi./week - 8.045km) and I walk during my exercise routine at Curves. I have to estimate the Curves part-- probably somewhere around 1-2 mi., so we'll settle for 1.5 mi./2.4135km.

That brings my total for last week to 10.4585km... rounded to 10.5km for simplicity.

That brings the total to 35.9km-- provided you guys let me join in the fun. ;)

Happy trails!
Nikki :daizy:

BTW- I'll be walking during my lunch time sometime here in the future. That should help boost my weekly numbers!

Signey Mon, Jun-02-03 20:14

Just jumped off my bike. It's so much fun to watch the hockey game while I pedal. Makes me feel more sporty. ;)

Here it is in all it's glory!

4 + 22.30 = 26.3 miles
6.44 + 35.9 = 41.44 kilometers

Great stuff!
Signey

HEY THERE...........

HEY THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GROOVIE IDEA.....I AM NOT GOOD IN MATH...LOL, TO CONVERT...I CAN'T WALK VERY FAR RIGHT NOW...BUT STILL I WANT TO BE INCLUDED...CELINA

oldie Tue, Jun-03-03 00:28

I did 5.1k on the treadmill this morning.

feather Tue, Jun-03-03 04:41

Add on another 5.5k at gym this am
New Total 55.04km 34.20miles.
We'd better find somewhere to go though. No use travelling in NZ at this rate we're going to run out of land. When we hit the water do we all start swimming or what??

hatetocook Tue, Jun-03-03 13:27

NEW TOTAL: 57.04 KM/36.20 MI

I'm guesstimating I did 2 KM last night-- got kicked off my cross trainer 7 minutes early but made up some by going extra on the rower (and BOY do I feel it in my shoulders today  )

Let us know when we run we're on the beach feather!

mnbooger Tue, Jun-03-03 14:13

NEW TOTAL: 73.92 KM/46.20 MI

Did 10 miles in the last week...if everyone picks 1 day a week to update their mileage, instead of day by day, this thread wont get to be 500 pages long. ;)
I will update mine every Tuesday.

feather Tue, Jun-03-03 15:59

New Total 77.92k 48.42ml

Good idea Steven. 4k from me today, and I'll report in next Wednesday.

Signey Tue, Jun-03-03 22:44

I think Steven's got a good idea here. I will report my miles next Tuesday. Until then it's just the slo mo instant replays of me riding the last 4 miles I logged, over and over. :D
Till Tuesday!
Signey

feather Wed, Jun-04-03 03:05

Since no-one has posted a route for us. I thought we could all suggest a part of the route. It doesn't matter if they don't join together. I've always wanted to do the Central Otago Rail Trail. Its a 150k walking/biking/horseriding track in "Lord of The Rings" territory. Here's the link (I hope). www.otagocentralrailtrail.co.nz/frames.html?

alighterme Wed, Jun-04-03 07:03

I'll help swim the ocean

Feather,

I would like to help swim across the ocean for my part and will post my miles. My knees are too bad right now to walk. Hope this is okay!
