For mildwild,
Yes I believe there are sugar alcohols in the ketogenics muffins. Nutrient info as follows: Carbs - 11 Dietary Fibre - 6 Polydextrose - 1 Mannitol - 4 I also agree that sugar alcohols can affect blood sugar and should be counted - in this case each muffin would be around 5 carbs if you do not deduct the sugar alcohols. Low carb tortillas?
Looking for a local source of Low Carb Tortillas.... Anyone?
I found "Gingerale, Rootbeer, Cherry cola etc. (all splenda) in Ogdensburg NY (40 minutes from Ottawa). Local grocery store there sell "Waist Watchers" brand POP and it's cheap. Atkins Morning Start Breakfast cereal has not been available yet due to lack of bilingual labelling, but sndcanada.com is selling it online cheap and thier prices are good too! (2 day shipping as well!) Thanks all for the postings! |
Hello from another Ottawan
I normally post/moderate on a Protein Power forum but was pleased to find an Ottawa LC discussion thread that listed local resources..
I have found some LC resources in town and add them here. Golden Flaxseed at any Bulk Foods store. $37.50 for 50 lbs. It is almost 0 carb compared to regular flaxseed and I use it in shakes, cereal, etc.. Davinci SF Syrups at Morrella Trading on Back St near the River. Only 6 Davinci flavors left and teh Oscars are sweetened with aspertame. When these run out they will not be replaced. GNC on Bank as mentioned previously. They really expanded their line over Christmas. They carry Maltitol sugar crystals as well but cannot carry Xylitol or Malitol except as an ingredient. Herb & Spice on Bank (Low carb bread (3 grams/slice) Costco – Odessy bars at 23.69/12 (half of GNC price) I'll check back looking for resources and am looking for other sources for Davinci SF Syrups, and other liquid sweeteners. I get FiberFit (concentrated liquid Splenda, 0 carbs) and SF Honey (thick Malitol Syrup, 0 carbs) sent up from the States but would like to find a local supply. |
Castus coming to Ottawa
I just found out that the leading US Low Carb retailer, Castus Low Carb Superstores, will soon be opening stores in Ontario, and I think with a store in Ottawa in the near future. I understand they have now sold over 40 franchises in the States - their prices are terrific and should only get better as they get bigger. I'm hoping to see them out here on the West Coast as well.

Sweeteners
Thanks for the info on Castus Low Carb Superstores. Even though there is a blossoming market for LC products, there are so many things missing that any new outlet always brings something new.
I miss some of the American products still not allowed here in Canada. Buying from the States usually requires an intermediate contact and a hefty broker fee at teh border. Delivered costs are approx. ... Liquid Splenda (FiberFit) $10.00 / bottle SF Honey (From Spring Tree in US Super Walmarts) $8.00/bottle Xylitol Crystals (works out at $25-$27 3 lb. Cannister) if ordered directley fronm Utah). If anyone is aware of any other way to get these products from a Canadian supplier, I would like to know. |
Hi everyone! I'm in Ottawa too.
There was talk of running in the first few posts. I've decided to start running again (after not for a LONG time) I'm quite slow, but if anyone wants a running buddy, let me know :) I don't use many "low carb" foods since I have to maintain a low fibre diet (doc orders) so I usually stick to the basics - meat, eggs, fish, and WELL cooked vegi's. Anyone ever thought of having something like a once a month meetup at a coffe shop, or something? I'm fairly new to Eastern ON, and don't know many people. |
"Anyone ever thought of having something like a once a month meetup at a coffe shop, or something?"
I would be up for a monthly meeting and noticed that some of this group met last year. I would find it an interesting meeting to discuss local resources and food prep ideas. This forum or thread is sparsely visited so it would have to be planned a few weeks or even a month in advance. I live central and have a vehicle so am pretty flexible on location. |
I would also be interested in meeting once a month. I think it would be great to discuss tips and recipes.

I'm going to start a new thread called "Ottawa meetup" that way we can organise this kind of stuff without having to go through 9 pages of posts.

Perhaps a new thread with all this info would be good? I went to Ogdensburg on the weekend, and the Price Chopper had alot of the ATkins stuff, BBQ sauce, ketsup, salad dressings, bake mix, chocolates, bars, Bryer's Carb-Sense ice cream, low carb pasta and low carb bread. |
Thanks for the Ogdensburg info!!! I myself was thinking a trip over the bridge might be worth it - might wait for better weather tho!

I think the bars were cheaper at the Walmart then the PRice Chopper. |

Does anyone know where I could find Bob Mill's Vital Wheat Gluten flour in downtown Ottawa. I am going to run out soon and would miss my own home-made lowcarb bread.
