Ours has tripled at least.
Meat, fish etc are more expensive than breads and pastas....but the rewards will be worth it.

My grocery bill has stayed about the same. Since I have begun LC, I have begun to realize how much processed and strachy foods my little guys eat. Now, they get fewer snack foods, more whole grains and lots more low glycemic fruits and veggies.

to keep my bill running smoothly, i have printed out monthly calendar pages and write out menu each month and it really helps. i write my shopping list on back, and then the kids know whats for dinner and they love that. i guess they think of it as like their school lunch menu. it really does help save time too, as i just look each morning and take out what is needed for that night. we tend to not eat as much junk that way and not eat out for lack of forgetting or not wanting to think of something.

It increased but has been offset by two things:

1. I quit smoking
2. I don't eat out as often

I probably spend less in a month due to the lifestyle change than before Atkins.

:)

I think I spend more, but not a huge amount. Besides if you were going to a Weight loss group you would have to pay the weekly meeting fees which we don't. So you do save if you look at it that way.

I am just re-starting Atkins. I lost 20 lbs last Spring and have kept most of it off since but was slipping back into eating high-carb. I have had a return of daily headaches and pain with the return to a higher carb diet. I still have 15 - 20 lbs to go.

I think the cost is about the same or less because Atkins has made me go back to planning meals and shopping better. With just the DH and I since the kids all grown up and gone meals were rather hodge-podge and shopping a pick things up on a daily basis--good way to spend extra money. Now if I can ever convince the DH to join me our cost would definately go down--- 3 half gallons of mint chip ice cream and 14 two liter bottles of Freesca a week--that would cut about $25.00!! .

I tend to just add potatoes for him and salads for me and subsitute spaghetti squash for pasta for me. I buy butter on sale and freeze -- I try to watch for arounds $1.00 a lb and Sam's has 4 or 5 packs pretty cheap. I've never been much for processed foods so I haven't tried any of the lo-carb products I just go for meats, fish, chicken, cheese, and veggies. Jeri

Our grocery bill has increased. I could, however, do a much better job at looking for bargains and asking for the comp price at stores that do that. I guess I'll add that to my list of 'things to do'! lol

PilotGal Fri, Jan-09-04 18:48

The only thing i've really noticed is that the price of beef has gone up tremendously. But with the Mad Cow scare, I am thinking prices should start dropping soon.
Don't buy any of those fad bars, or shakes or lo carb breads or tortilla's.. I leave those to the people that require fad foods.
I've always cooked from scratch, will always cook from scratch, and won't be taunted by fad foods.
Hopefully beef prices will begin to drop.
they're saying consumer demands are raising the price of beef... so many people on the lo carb wagon.

increase in food bill

yes, our food bill did increase, but we use the lc shakes and lc bars regularly. I have lost 35 lbs since last June and gained 5 during the holidays of which 2 I have already gotten off. We eat lots of beef, chicken, veggies, BUT no longer buy cookies, chips and all that other junk food. We do try new lc items from time to time and also included in the food bill, is the supplements that we did not take prior to Atkins. I have been taking Basic 3, Essential Oils, and Dieter's Advantage. They are so expensive. Are there any comparables that might be cheaper and do the same? My husband has lost about 40 lbs. We feel so much better. He is 62 and I am 59. The dr has told both of us that we are in good shape, just still need to get off a few more lbs. I now weigh 148, my goal is to get down to 124 which is what I weighed 41 yrs ago when we got married. I really can't see myself that light, but I'm going for it anyway!

bzeus Sun, Jan-11-04 07:21

I haven't been buying too much of the specialty low-carb items, prefering to eat the whole foods. I think my grocery bill has dropped from about $120 per week (for our family of 4) to $85 per week.

Please keep in mind that this is Canadian funds so $35 savings actually equals about 9 cents US per week. (Just kidding!)

By skipping 90% of the grocery aisles, I'm saving so much. I find I'm just shopping on the perimeter of the store (dairy, meat, produce) so am less likely to impulse buy. I do get the occasional treat for the kids' school lunches but basically save quite a bit!

Neil Sun, Jan-11-04 16:25

Mine has gone up immensly as well....

odyssey Sun, Jan-11-04 17:20

Initially, my food bill increased as i was anxious to try all the new things and all of the things i had not been able to eat before. After i settled into the menus i enjoyed eating i noticed a downward trend in how much i spend each month.

Mabel Wed, Jan-28-04 12:43

Bump! Seems relevant...

Costs are way up for me as well.

pookiejay Sat, Jan-31-04 02:56

My food billl is out of control, trying to afoard a LC lifestyle while going through college is unreal. But I do stay alive and I am still losing weight! I spend a ton of money on bacon, and lunch meats. How many college students ever even eat meat?

pd Rydia Sat, Jan-31-04 17:39

Grocery bill has increased, but we (mum and I) spend a fortune less on eating out. I also save on my antidepressant prescription (or, now, the lack thereof).

L10JOHNfan Sat, Jan-31-04 20:33

I am on South Beach and just came over to this board because a guy in my office is on Atkins and is doing so great:yay: so I thought I would look through some of the threads as we talk about our diets at lunch. (It is certainly nice when you have support from other people:clap: ) Anyway, I just went shopping today and my bill is way up! I went to the Super Fresh for some of the family's food and to Trader Joe's for the rest of the items that I needed and I would say that due to the fact that I am the only one on the diet, it is an additional $40 every two weeks to my food bill. I am the only one on the diet in my house because as I have been told by all other 4 family members, they will NOT be giving up their bread! Very interesting thread!

caveman Sat, Jan-31-04 23:00

I am saving money because I am eating out at restaurants much less frequently.

Lindym Mon, Feb-02-04 11:48

We were spending quite a bit at first (we are in the 2nd week of induction) but that is tapering off. Part of the problem is that I don't cook: the family joke is when I needed a new stove it was suggested that I draw circles on a cardboard box & use that!

This WOE does help me out because at least for now its pretty simple to fix something attractive and tasty.

djcarbno Mon, Feb-02-04 20:20

Definately! It seems like the fresh veggies that are good for induction are out of season! Seems like I buy more meat products also but then I always have leftover for lunches! So all in all it is more expensive at the store- but the savings I am getting from not eating out all the time evens it out. Besides how could I really put a cost on a healthy way of eating!

scottjan Mon, Feb-02-04 22:11

Less, no junk food for me and no processed food mainly because of food allergies. But, boy do I feel better.

Tonya3 Mon, Feb-02-04 22:28

Hi Everyone!

My grocery bill just went up a bit we have just put the whole family on a lc woe. I am determined my kids are going to eat lc if I have to spend more it is worth it. My husband does not have as much control as I have so he needs all foods to be out of the house to do as he is supposed to. My kids are in shock but in a couple of weeks I think they will be adjusted. I will have to think of something else to do for Valentine's than Chocolate. I tried this in Sept. but when Halloween rolled around it got lacks and I should have stood my ground.
I usually spend about $260 every other week but this time it was $330 of course we were out of everything. I will try to do better next trip. I found some wonderful bread by sara lee and Home Pride and it was white lc. Home pride is more lc than sara lee and the family loves it. The crust is as soft as the bread so fresh.

I have not posted here much yet I am still doing a lot of reading and I am a little overwhelmed how big the board is. Lots of great info. I read a couple of hours here every night. I am just slow losing.

Has anyone else noticed that the groceries in your cart, whether their cost is up or down, take up far less room than the stuff other people seem to buy? (I am an inveterate shopping cart snoop -- I love to try to figure out what other shoppers are cooking) We spent about $90 Canadian the other day at No Frills, a local discount grocery chain, and it just barely filled two of those plastic grocery cartons you put in the cart.

This WOE can be both nutrient AND dollar dense, I guess! But definitely worth it...

eric909 Tue, Feb-03-04 23:37

Mine went down I guess because all I did was eatout

Tonya3 Tue, Feb-03-04 23:42

I have two baskets LOL!

I have a family of 5 and we are all eating this way so I have to get two shopping carts because of all the meats I buy. I don't want my other food rubbing against the meat especially my fresh veggies. I try to shop for a two week period but I always go back to get some more fresh veggies or such.
I need to find out why I am having a stall though it seems I have been eating clean since Feb 5 but only lost 2lbs and it is very discouraging. Any ideas let me know.

Thanks,
Tonya

Tonya3 Tue, Feb-03-04 23:45

Eric your weight is falling off it looks like. Your face is much thinner than the begining weight. Keep up your hard work.

Costs are down at my house, especially if you count the reduction in eating out.
I used to spend $15/week for lean cuisine for lunch, and we would eat out 1-2 nights/week. Weekends were crazy with fast food for lunch etc. Now I cook meat and veggies, or salad at dinner, and bring leftovers for lunch.

My cart is filled with meat and veggies, but it helps that my husband is a hunter and a fisherman so my main costs are salad, chicken, and pork. Eggs are cheap, and we go through a lot every week. I even splurge and buy brown eggs, and it comes out cheaper than a cart filled with chips, crackers, cookies, low cal breakfast bars, and other prepared foods.

I usually just by the meat or veggies that are on sale, we eat both fresh and frozen veggies.

I don't buy any specialty low carb products. This is a place where LCing can get expensive.
