Another podcast interview with Dr Casey Means and Dr Lyon on the book to be published May 14th. [in low carb books thread]
The missing piece to better health/optimizing metabolic health
Quote:
Americans are getting sicker year after year, despite ever-increasing healthcare spending. Dr. Means believes we are focusing on the wrong problem entirely. Metabolic dysfunction. In this podcast, expect to learn about the world of cellular health, the five pillars that contribute to optimal function, the best ways to nourish your cells with the right nutrients and foods, the unique needs of women's health, including hormonal considerations and why fasting might not be the best approach for women (especially during pregnancy). This podcast also sheds light on the connection between fertility and metabolic health and the 5 biomarkers you can get checked for FREE during your yearly physical to gain valuable insights into your metabolic health. We also touch on how simple changes in your eating habits can significantly lower your risk of disease. This episode is packed with valuable insights into how you can optimize your metabolism and cellular health for a longer, healthier life.

The five metabolic markers are very basic, but are what UNC Research used for that often quoted 93% Americans are metabolically unhealthy. Dr Means, Lyon and many others use stricter limits to define healthy.

When Women's World features Dr Lyon and a High Protein Diet for Weight Loss, you know that Keto is well and truly over ;)
It use to have Dr Westman articles and all the Keto recipe blogs on repeat 2017-2019, now It's all about Protein and being Strong! I use Women's World as a Diet Popularity Index in the "real world" rather than diet forums nd FB pages. Protein is all over the grocery check-out tabloids…but priortise seafood, poultry and lean meat over Fudge made with Protein Powder.

I Lost 130 lbs at Age 53!” — Here’s the Protein Combo That Builds Muscle + Boosts Weight Loss
“I lost more after age 50 than I ever did when I was younger!" — Sheryl Sealy

Ps: I lost more weight at 70 than I did at 35, the first time I reached my ideal body weight since 1985, and with more muscle (my muscle is still a work in progress!)

PPS: somehow i had dropped Dr Ranjan Chatterjee's podcast Feel Better, Live More, there are now 450 episodes!
Catching up on a few favorites, Dr Lyon's interview was in 2 parts:

Is anyone adding the casein shake near bedtime that is mentioned in the book?

JEY100 Tue, May-21-24 05:56

I don't mainly because Dr Layman believes the slower protein digestion with casein is a negative, not a positive.

I only use 1 scoop of whey a day in early/mid-afternoon, so it fits my schedule and food plan better. Casein is better if taken at night to take advantage of that slow digestion…let us know how it works for you.

JeanM Tue, May-21-24 11:43

Thanks for the link Janet. I think I will just stick with the whey!

WereBear Wed, May-22-24 01:11

I am likewise sticking with whey. My brand is Naked Whey, but it is all protein. They put a lot of stuff in the pre-mixes, more than I had thought.

Thanks for prompting me to take a closer look at the additives in my whey powder. I will use what I have on hand and pay closer attention when I need to buy more . :)

Dr. Gabrielle Lyon has been interviewed by Dr. Andrew Huberman. Posted today on the Huberman Lab podcast. Haven’t finished it all yet, but there are timestamps to help you find your interest, particularly her protein recommendations, protein timing, studies showing substantially more weight loss with high protein diets, and exercise. Since the podcast is over three hours long, this listening experience is going to take a long while.🙀🙄 !!

Quote:
In this episode, my guest is Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, D.O., a board-certified physician who did her clinical and research training at Washington University in geriatrics and nutrition. She is also an expert in how diet and exercise impact muscle and whole-body health and longevity. Dr. Lyon is a bestselling author and public educator. We discuss how healthy skeletal muscle promotes longevity, brain health, disease prevention, ideal body composition, and the health of other organs and bodily systems.

She makes specific nutritional recommendations for optimal health: what to eat, how much to eat, the timing of meals, the essential need for adequate quality protein (including animal and plant-based options), supplementation, and how our dietary requirements change with age. She explains why specific types of resistance training are essential to build and maintain muscle and overall metabolic health.

She also describes how to include resistance training as part of your exercise regimen — regardless of age or sex.~ She also provides specific mindset tools to encourage sustained adherence to healthy eating and exercise practices. Women and men of all ages will benefit from Dr. Lyon’s practical, evidence-based protocols to improve muscle and whole-body appearance, function, and health.

Her diet tips, especially as we age, are so important to understand if you increase protein and are getting a lot of love on Twitter. 😻
