For the first first year of my diabetes I was terrible uncomfortable with the idea of taking metformin (glucophage). You hear about the risks and think, wow, this is terrible to be taking this.

It really helps to do research about its benefits. I really became convinced of its benefits when I read about it being a sort of "anti-aging" drug. Here are a couple of articles posted on the lef.org site :

Sorry, no neither one said. It probably depends on the individual. Anyway you look at it, it's frustrating.

Metformin

I lost 7 lbs. the first 3 weeks I was on Metformin. I have, with diet and exercise gone on to lose 20 more and decrease my BF and BMI. Metformin works by decreasing your insulin resistance. Not only diabetics are given it. Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome take it to help regulate their metabolism. I don't think 1/2 pill will do much for you, but it won't hurt you and it's a good place to start. It can cause stomach upset so take with some yogurt.

Anyone on Metformin? I have a question!

Hello all, I was recently diagnosed with type 2. my A1C was at the time 9.2 (about 2 weeks ago) My sugar levels have been fine and steady (under 120 even with meals) I had stopped taking Metformin, but am afraid I may get worst and am thinking about going back on. I have never been a person who liked to take meds and figured my body would just fix it's self as long as I take care of myself. I am on a strict diet and i am also losing weight. I am 34 male. any suggestions would be great full as I am completely new to this.

Thanks all  :help:

It's great that you are watching what you eat and are losing weight. That will definitely help with controlling your BG.

If your doctor put you on a medication, then talk with him/her to find out if going off is an option. It might take awhile for your BG to even out and remaining on medication could be worthwhile to you for now.

You are doing a great thing though for your body right now! Keep up the good work!

I'm a type I, but my Dr had me start taking 500mg 2x/day of metformin about a year ago- it is the extended release kind which has fewer side effects.

For the first few weeks, my tummy was upset but now it does not bother me. And my BG did come down. I like it!

I now can use much less insulin, which is great news.

I lost about 8 pounds when I started using it, but I have always been super careful with my diet and am also a "turtle" so I agree it is not a magic bullet but it can be a very useful tool.

Best of luck.

I took Metformin ER for over 2 years and, other than minimal
decrease of morning FBG,it was worthless so I stopped using
it.I saw certain posts on this forum about certain people having
good results with Metformin so I felt it was worth a try.I
took 1500mg per day.
Cheers from hot humid Houston
