I just had to comment....I think I really picked up a lot of self-confidence and an assurance that I really *could* lose the weight when I passed a similar test myself.

I call that an a-ha moment. You'll be surprised at how much easier it gets to bypass the sweets as time passes and you find all those other great low carb foods you could have instead.

When I first started reading your post... I thought... oh no-- he doesn't have to miss his son's birthday because of low carb... just eat a big low carb dinner before going.
